Gran Canaria , one of the Canary Islands, is a paradise for hiking. The island is well known internationally for its array of sun and sand options. Now, however, we suggest a different facet of Gran Canaria for you to discover: its countryside. The best way to do this is to explore its many tracks and trails on foot. Almost 43% of this enclave in the Atlantic Ocean is protected countryside, and it also has 32 ecological areas with special protection. Enjoy all the options available on this island that has been called a “miniature continent” on account of its wealth of countryside and varied microclimates. Put on your boots and set out for adventure.

Get ready to discover volcanoes, cascading clouds on the peaks, weird rock formations, an extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna, waterfalls, viewpoints, springs… Take your camera to capture some of the most beautiful spots you could imagine, on the magical island that is Gran Canaria.

Itinerary description

Day 1: Arrival to Gran Canaria
Welcome at the airport and transfer to Aguimes. Meet the local program coordinator. He will give you all the trip documents and suggestions about what to do and what to visit on your free days in Gran Canaria.
Agüimes is a little charming town located on the south east of Gran Canaria. It is the departing point when visiting Guayadeque’s Valley, an impressive ravine which enters deep on the centre of the Island. In Agüimes you will enjoy the peaceful atmosphere in its the town centre, the outdoor art museum, with beautiful sculptures located in different places of the village, the colorful houses and the impressive church, which is a Spanish National Monument. Agüimes also offers a rich cultural life and many popular events that take place all year around. There you can also enjoy of the local gastronomy in any of the many restaurants and cafes that you will find on the town centre.

Day 2: Gran Canaria’s natural triangle
Guayadeque’s Valley offers a great interest for various reasons: geological, the vegetation, the history of the valley. The route starts in Montaña de las Tierras, where the Guayadeque’s Valles walls become gigantic. Following a steep old path we will walk in the direction of the centre of the Island, till we reach the Caldera de los Marteles. We will walk along a pine forest which will take us to the Caldera de Tirajana’s viewpoint, which offer beautiful views over Santa Lucía and the Amurga range of mountains. The views are outstanding from there. Following the top of the Guayadeque’s mountains we will return to the starting point.

Day 3: Roque Nublo, route to the heart of Gran Canaria – 8.5km, 5 hours, difference in altitude +461 m / -461 m
The Roque Nublo is a natural symbol of Gran Canaria, a “must visit” while you are in Gran Canaria. The Roque Nublo Hiking Route starts in El Garañón, and runs through the border of the “Caldera de Tejeda” (the cauldron of Tejeda), which result from numerous volcanic eruptions along the History. Most of the time this path passes between endemic plant species such as the Canary pine tres. From La Fogalera viewpoint the views becomes breathtaking, we can see a stunning sight of the Roque Bentaiga from there, most of the days, we can also see Mount Teide over the clouds.We will continue hiking around Roque Nublo up to its base, a large plain on which surface is set up this huge basaltic rock.

Day 4: Free day in Tejeda
Free day in Tejeda to enjoy and discover.

Tejeda is located on the centre of the Island. It is a little village from where you will enjoy of great views over Gran Canaria’s west side, specially is the look over Roque Bentaiga, a sacred rock for the ancient islands’ inhabitants. Tejeda has recently been included on the list of the 10 most beautiful villages in Spain. In Tejeda is located the highest winery in Gran Canaria, which accounts with several awards for the quality of its wines.  Also, Tejeda is known for producing almond sweets and pastries, the almond trees that grow on the area give a magical aspect to the village during the month of February. The village offers also the possibility to visit some little traditional museums of great interest.

Day 5: Way to Artenara, the 100 Valleys viewpoint – 7.5km, 4 hours, difference in altitude +210 m / -345 m
The way to Artenara offers impressive views over the range of mountains on the west side of Gran Canaria. We call this part of Gran Canaria the 100 Valleys’ Island. On this route you will enjoy especially of the fantastic views over Roque Nublo, Roque Bentaiga the Acusa Valley…. and some days, you will also enjoy of the view of Mount Teide (Tenerife) over the clouds. During part of the route you will walk on a canarian pine forest. The route finishes in a charming little town: Artenara, where you will visit the Virgen de la Cuevita Sancturary.

Day 6: Caldera de Bandama, the volcano and wine route
We will start the route descending 200 metres to reach the bottom of the Caldera de Bandama (Caldera = Crater). On the way down we will start feeling that we are entering in an isolated world, where the air, the sounds, the vegetation and the whole life has its own pace, we are entering a place which becomes hostile and idyllic at the same time. A visit to the Caldera de Bandama will help us to understand the geologic origin of Gran Canaria, an Island which is the result of thousands of years of volcanic eruptions. The Bandama Natural Monument is part of the Tafira Protected Landscape. When we reach the centre of the crater we will feel small, the surrounding crater walls are impressive. The Bandama Area is currently the main wine producing area of Gran Canaria, the soil of the area and also the climatology has created the ideal conditions for the farmers to set up their vineyards.

Day 7: Free day in Agaete
Free day in Agaete to discover the area and enjoy of the sea.

Agaete is a white little village located on the north of Gran Canaria. Agaete enjoys of wonderful surroundings, such as the beach and harbor, with its little fishing boats, the majestic valley and also the views over the cliffs of Gran Canaria’s west side. Agaete offers plenty of things to do: visiting a coffee plantation, swimming on the ocean of the natural swimming pools, enjoying the town centre quiet streets, trying  the local gastronomy in the Puerto de Las Nieves or visiting the various archeological sites you can find on the area.
