VIA FRANCIGENA – FROM WISQUES TO ARRAS – 7 DAYS/6 NIGHTS

 

This walk will have you continue south through the northern region of France, Pas-de-Calais.

 

This area once had mining as its main economic driving force until the 1960s, when the mines were closed, but you can still see remnants of this industry as you pass through old mining villages.

 

This area is also rich in history from both World War I and World War II.

PACKAGE DETAILS

Day 1: Wisques


Arrive – Wisques is a village in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. Here you can enjoy a traditional French meal and visit the Benedictine Abbeys.

Day 2: Wisques to Thérouanne (14km)


Today’s short walk will be through the countryside and villages where you can avail of the café and bars to stop for a coffee and even get some lunch. Passing through Wizernes, Helfaut, and Inghem, each of these villages will provide an opportunity to grab a coffee, a snack, or even as the day goes on a glass of wine! Your stop for the night will be Thérouanne, once a Roman capital and one of the richest bishoprics in Northern France, but is now just a small town.

Day 3: Therouanne to Amettes (14km)


Another relatively short walk today, you will leave Thérouanne and passing through the gently sloping up and down countryside be awarded with sweeping views over crop fields. Halfway through today, you will pass through Enquin-les- Mines where you can perhaps grab a bite to eat. Your stop for the night will be Amettes, where you can visit the birthplace of Saint Benoît Labre, one of the patron saints of pilgrims who died on the steps of a church in Rome.

Day 4: Amettes to Bruay la Buissiere (20km)


The walk today will be somewhat longer than the last two days and although still mostly through the undulating countryside, you will be moving through larger villages and towns. This area once used to be a hive of activity when mining was the main endeavour in this area but are much quieter now. Bruay la Buissiere, your stopover for the night is a former coalmining town where there is a larger art deco style swimming pool that weather permitting and depending on the time of year you may be able to go for a dip in!

Day 5: Bruay la Buissiere to Acq (21km)


Much like the previous days, the walk will be through a mixture of villages and open countryside with panoramic views as far as the eye can see over huge crop fields. Acq, where you will be staying, is small farming village just north-west of your Arras your final destination for this section.

Day 6: Acq to Arras (14km)


A short walk today will take you from the farming village of Acq through crop fields before you begin to arrive into the town of Arras, which is the capital of the Pas-de-Calais department. Arras is a popular tourist destination thanks to its splendid Flemish and Baroque architecture and a must see is the Town Hall and its majestic bell tower, which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Day 7: Arras


Today we bid adieu! After breakfast we bid you farewell.

Way in & out:


You have the option depending on where you are flying from, to either fly into Brussels or Paris. It is then possible to get a get a train to St Omer and finally a taxi to Wisques.

Leaving Arras you can get the TGV to Paris which takes approximately 50 minutes and times and prices can be found on the following website here.

Once in Paris you can get a flight to you home destination.
