Gran Canaria Walking Festival  is the international meeting of hiking in Gran Canaria where lovers of nature and of hiking can come together every year and find out the best places on the island to hike.

 

In this sixth edition we want that you enjoy the most natural and surprising side of Gran Canaria. Professional guides will be the managers of entertaining and directing the routes through idyllic places in different languages.

 

Six different routes have been designed by the most emblematic places of the island in order that the participants enjoy and discover this miniature continent. One of these routes will be an astronomic one that will be carried out on the night of Saturday, the 11th of November.

 

Gran Canaria Walking Festival – a gathering of more than 800 participants of more than 25 nationalities and guarantees a unique experience.

Day 1: Gran Canaria’s Inagua Route (10km approx)

Nature Excitement
Located in the southwest part of the island, the natural reserve of “Inagua” introduces you to a place where nature and adventure creates the perfect combination.
This route will let you explore the most arid and hilly places of this part of the island, enjoying at the same time the different local species of endemic plants and animals.This route, was also a long time ago the main path that connected the central part of the island with the rest of it, so it also has a really big cultural and historical value.
This, is a perfect place to enjoy trekking and at the same time to enjoy the most beautiful landscapes of this part of the island. We could consider this route the perfect route to enjoy not only trekking and practicing outdoor sports, but also to enjoy nature and of course local habits, traditions and gastronomy.

Day 2: The Route of St. James (10km approx)

The walk today will take you to the heart and natural symbol of Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo.  This circular walk is over stony natural trails, dirt paths and at times on tarmac.  Traversing through the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reservation (UNESCO, 2005) you get up close with the many plants that are native to the island.  Whilst ascending, you will be rewarded with breath taking views from the viewing points.   At the summit you will be welcomed by the awe inspiring basaltic rock, Roque Nublo, which was declared a Natural Monument in 1987.

Day 3: The Valley Route (10km approx)

Discovering Agaete…
Located in the northern part of the island, Agaete is the most iconic village of the north of the island due to its fishing traditions, sea culture and being surrounded by great and beautiful mountains.

 

It is consider to be a place where its fishing and agricultural traditions are mixed perfectly well with the hospitality and helpful ways of living of the local people. Agaete not only offers nature and typical seafood dishes, it is also known for offering a great variety of ludic and sports activities, considering at the same time the beauty of its landscape and natural footpaths.

 

However we must take into account that this route requires certain skills due to the beginning of it, with a difference in height of approximately 400 meters. Without any doubt it is the perfect route for those who are high skilled trekkers, but at the same time is up to anyone who likes to enjoy nature and any kind of outdoor sports in a perfect scenery and a constant contact with different endemic species of plants and animals.

 

This route will make you discover the most beautiful natural places of this little village and at the same time will give you the opportunity to discover one of the most important natural monuments of this part of the island,  “Macizo de Tamadaba”.

And…What about the center of the island?
Located in one of the most important and visited places of the island, Valsequillo gives you the possibility of enjoying its natural places through its natural paths.
With an increasing difficulty this route known as the “Ruta del Sauce” offers a really technical route through its landscape which is formed of different short and slippery hills, but at the same time full of nice and natural places where different endemic species live together.
The most attractive thing of this route is probably its scenery, emphasizing the natural monument of “Los Marteles”, which is one of the most visited natural monuments of this part of the island. At the same time we must take into account that this, is one of the most important geomorphological places of the island being the “Barranco de los Cernícalos” the most visited of all. This route allows you to enjoy the most beautiful natural places of the island, specially for those of you that really likes enjoying outdoor sports such as trekking and at the same time being in constant contact with nature.
The route finishes in one of the most beautiful and iconic villages of the center of the island, called Valsequillo, being a place with a tremendous and awesome agricultural and gastronomic tradition,that will guarantee you an incredible and unique experience.

Night Walk

Who has not wanted to observe a sky full of stars from the top of a mountain? Watch the immensity of the sky from the heart of Gran Canaria, the best place on the island to admire it.

 

This activity is the symbiosis of hiking at night along with the astronomy, in which you can enjoy the fantastic skies of the area, an infinite yet apparently reachable sky full of beautiful lights. During this tour we will be able to see the wonders of nature under the moonlight and the stars.

 

The tour will be suitable for anyone, which makes it unique and with a viewpoint from where you can enjoy the best views of the Caldera de Tejeda and the Central Summit. The activity will culminate with the observation and the basic knowledge on astronomy given by experts in the subject that will help you to understand the sky and its secrets, using specific materials.

Wine and Nature…a relaxing path.

Located in a unique landscape and very close to the capital and the sea, Bandama offers to all kind of visitors an incredible natural experience surrounded by extraordinary green zones and vineyards in one of the most beautiful parts of the island, where soft temperatures and sunny days makes this place, the ultimate place to be.

 

This Bandama route is one of those routes that offers a great variety of paths to all kinds of visitors. With a distance of approximately 6KM, the most iconic things of this place are the different natural paths and green zones that allows enjoying nature and outdoor sports at the same time . This place, is also known for having one of the most important golf course on the island, and the same time for having perfect weather conditions to enjoy trekking and tourism around incredible natural monuments.

 

It is considered to be an easy route, approximately of two and a half hours walking through nearly none high skilled hills and as such is considered to be therefore a really easy and enjoyable route. At this point, we must take into account that participants will be divided into groups of 25 persons in order to avoid agglomerations and to enjoy as much as possible this relaxing route and its viewpoints.

 

We must take into account that the purpose of this route is to relax, have fun and enjoy trekking.  Whilst at the same time enjoying the natural beauty of the place and the different leisure options this place offers. Finally you will also have the opportunity to enjoy our local wines, which are considered one the most high-quality wines of the island and of Spain, always surrounded by beautiful natural monuments and a unique landscape.
