Summary

St Jacob’s Way or the Via Jabobi connects Geneva with Le Puy-en-Velay which is the start of the Via Podiensis. Unlike many of the routes to Santiago that have been pilgrim routes for centuries this particular route was only established in the mid 1990’s. The Association Rhone-Alpes de Amis de Saint-Jacques established the route along the GR65 so that pilgrims coming from Switzerland, Central Europe and Germany could walk to Le Puy and from there join the Via Podiensis before joining the infamous Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela. This route due to the area that you are walking through is very undulating with many climbs and descents but a considerable part is through forests which add to the charm of this walk.

Highlights

  • Geneva City for its culture and food
  • Rhone River for its natural beauty
  • Yenne crossroads of the Camino de Santiago and one of the Assisi Ways.

Day 1: Geneva
Bienvenue à Genève! Sitting on the western shore of Lake Leman Geneva is not only home to the UN but also the world’s tallest fountain, Jet d’Eau. Take time to explore the old town, the many museums and art galleries as well as indulge in some fondue or fish freshly caught form the lake.

Day 2: Geneva to Col du Mont Sion (21km, 5hr15)
Starting out you will walk through the suburbs of Geneva before hitting the countryside and crossing the Swiss/French border. Continuing now through the Rhone-Alpes region you will pass through the village of Beaumont before reaching your stop for the night the sleepy village of Col du Mont Sion.

Day 3: Col du Mont Sion to Chaumont (19km, 4hr45)
The walk today will be over the gently rolling countryside of the Rhone-Alpes region. Weaving past lush green fields, and forest the walk today is pleasant before a gentle ascent up to the picturesque hilltop village of Chaumont.

Day 4: Chaumont to Motz (21km, 5hr15)
Today you will continue south towards the Rhone River. With similar scenery to yesterday you will be walking over rolling green hills interspersed with quaint Alpine villages such as Desingy. Just beyond is the rural town on the Rhone Seyssel. Why not take a break in this bustling town before your last stretch of the day to Motz.

Day 5: Motz to Chanaz (15km, 3hr45)
A gentle stroll along the Rhone is your walk today. The Rhone now a wide river flows beside you as you walk on its left bank in the flood plains that are planted with crop fields and the occasional forest track. Arriving into Chanaz a small village and your stop for the night you are now in the Savoie. This lively little village is nicknamed Little Venice and here you can soak up the relaxed atmosphere and perhaps enjoy an evening meal on the water edge.

Day 6: Chanaz to Yenne (17km, 4h15)
Another pleasant days walking awaits you along the left bank of the Rhone River though not right by the riverside today. Leaving Cahanz there will be some mild climbs up from the river floodplains to the rolling countryside of farmland and small forested patches. Today you will start to see vineyards on the surrounding fields as well as pass through some small villages before descending to walk alongside the Rhone into Yenne. This town is host not only to walkers on the Camino de Santiago but also one of the Assisi Ways to Italy.

Day 7: Yenne to St Genix-sur-Guiers (24km, 6hr)
Leaving Yenne the walk will quickly leave the valley as you climb up onto the forested Mont Tournier. The majority of today will be up on this ridge walking on forest paths. You will know you are getting close to your destination for the night when you start to gently wind down through mountain villages to St Genix-sur-Guiers. Here you can sample some locally produced wines and cheese, what better treat can there be after a day’s walking and to celebrate finishing this section of the walk.

Day 8: St Genix-sur-Guiers
Today we say Au Revoir and hope to see you on the next section of the Jacob’s Way soon.
