DAY BY DAY

Day 1: Chavanay
Bienvenue – Chavanay – is a small village on the foot of the Rhone vineyards. Relax here and sample some of the famous Rhone wines before you start your journey to Le Puy en Vale.

Day 2: Chavanay to Bourg Argental (26km, 6hr30)
Today is a beautiful walk that will introduce you to the mountains of Pilat. Starting out the day will be through the vineyards of the region before you start your gentle ascent up the mountains. In the mountains you will pass the Croix de Sainte-Blandine before descending to the long winded name of the village of St Julien Molin Molette. Climbing up out of this village you will cross the Col du Banchet before descending to Bourg Argental. Be sure to visit the Saint André Church.

Day 3: Bourg Argental to Les Setoux (17km, 4hr15)
The walk today is shorter but this will be predominantly uphill although be this somewhat gently. Initially leaving Bourg Argental you will follow a disused railway. Climbing steadily by fields and through woodlands some steeper climbs will come as you approach your stopover for the day Les Setoux, a quiet little stone house village.

Day 4: Les Setoux to Montfaucon-en-Velay (16km, 4hr)
This section today is a welcome reprieve from yesterday as although it is undulating it is much easier going. Walking over fields, on forest paths and quiet country roads you will amble your way to Montfaucon-en-Velay. This quiet picturesque village makes for a pleasant place to stop over. When here take the opportunity to visit the Notre-Dame Church where there are 12 famous paintings by Abel Grimmer representing the life of Christ.

Day 5: Montfaucon-en-Velay to St Jeures (18km, 4hr30)
Another pleasant day walking waits over the rolling hills of Velay. Arriving at Tence you will cross the Le Lignon brook on an old stone bridge. Continuing on you will slowly ascend to St Jeures passing the graveyard before arriving into the town. Here you can sample the famous “Red Pearls of the Monts du Velay” as well as other local gastronomic delights.

Day 6: St Jeures to St Julien Chapteuil (17km, 4h15)
Although similar landscape to the previous days, today is more populated with small towns and villages. The walk to start with to Araules is typical of the last few days but after this you have a climb up to Raffe across fields and then woodland. The reward for this ascent is a panoramic view over the volcanic shaped landscape that lies before you and which will take you to your final stop for today St Julien Chapteuil. When here be sure to visit the church of Saint-Julien which will provide you with an elevated view over the surrounding countryside.

Day 7: St Julien Chapteuil to Le Puy en Velay (18km, 4hr30)
Today is the final day on the St Jacob’s Way and will see you arriving into the important pilgrimage town of Le Puy en Velay. With some gentle up and downs the walk today is predominantly descending to Le Puy via a combination of country tracks by fields, woodlands and quiet country roads before coming into a more built up area at Brives- Charensac that will remain till Le Puy. To complete your trip be sure to make your way up to the Cathedral atop of a volcanic hill. Take time to wander around this historical and picturesque town and sample some of the local gastronomy.

Day 8: Le Puy en Velay
Au Revoir – Having completed the St Jacob’s Way and having stayed in Le Puy en Vale we hope you will return to continue on the Camino de Santiago Via Podiensis.
